Gentle movement for period cramps
Simple stretches and light movement that can help period cramps feel more manageable, plus signs that pain needs a doctor's check.

Period cramps happen when the muscles of the uterus contract. For many people, light movement and warmth can make them feel easier.
Warm up first
A heat pad or warm shower before you move can help muscles relax.
Try slow stretches
Child’s pose, cat-cow and lying knee-to-chest stretches are gentle on the lower back and belly. Hold each for a few slow breaths and stop if anything hurts.
Take a walk
A short, easy walk gets blood flowing and can lift your mood on day one or two.
Rest when you need it
Some days your body asks for rest, and that’s fine too.
When to see a doctor
Pain that stops you from doing everyday things, gets worse over time, or comes with very heavy bleeding is worth checking with your doctor.
